The Saugatuck Public Schools’ board of education and administration strive to promote a learning culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. Recent national events and tragedies remind the board that work remains to be done in creating an educational culture in our schools that rejects racism, discrimination and harassment in all its forms.
In this spirit of continual improvement for all students in the district, the board has determined that it is time to re-examine the use of our current team name and mascot.
The board has invited Julie Dye, a member of the Pokagon Band Potawatomi Tribe, to provide education and awareness surrounding the misrepresentation of Native names at its 6:00 p.m. meeting on Monday, July 20th. Saugatuck resident John Fox has also been asked to address the board.
Due to COVID-19 guidance, which limits the number of participants at an indoor meeting, the meeting will be open to the public via Zoom. The board welcomes community participation in the meeting and encourages community members wishing to participate to contact [email protected] for access.
Sincerely, Dr. Tim Travis, Superintendent Mr. Nathan Lowery, President SPS Board of Education
